Do I Have to Go To Meetings Forever?

Here’s the thing about recovery—you’re in charge. There is no right or wrong way to stay sober, there are only suggestions. Whether you follow them is up to you. You and only you are responsible for your sobriety.

Some people who have an addiction attend fellowship meetings for years. Meetings are their social outlet, a place to help them stay sober, to laugh, to shoulder someone tears, and offer encouragement. Other people in recovery may attend meetings for a number of years, and then find they don’t need them anymore. Meeting goers and oldtimers may frown upon those who no longer attend meetings. They may be projecting their own fear of losing hold of sobriety by no longer attending meetings.

A person who chooses not to keep going to meetings may have made a commitment to themselves to never drink alcoholically again. They have an inner confidence and strength that could have been born from all the meetings they did attend, along with years of therapy and self reflection. This is not to say that those who choose and want to keep going to meetings are any less strong in their convictions. It’s just a matter of choice.

Choice is what recovery gives you, because you are no longer held hostage by the vise grip of addiction. You can do what you want with your life. Some people are motivated to start their own business, grow organic vegetables, work on programs that help inner city kids, become a docent at a fine arts museum. People in recovery have their own paths. Some have to relapse a few times before they get it—they can’t drink in safety anymore!

It’s important not to judge others about their choices. That’s where the slogan Live and Let Live has merit. Besides, you may already have plenty of judges of your own in your head! Learning not to judge others can free you up. Think of all that time wasted on what others are doing with their lives, when you can’t do anything about it, not to mention it’s none of your business. Also, when you judge others you are operating outside yourself. In recovery, healing comes from within, so it’s important to notice where you keep your focus.
