Let’s Talk Recovery Roadblocks: Help is On the Way

Asking for help can feel like the hardest thing to do. When you are looking down the barrel of addiction, not yet in recovery, it feels like help is so far off. The challenge is ten-fold when it comes to chemical dependency and recovery. The biggest thing holding you back is likely a fear of what is coming. The best way to get past it is to just accept help and take it step by step.

Facing Fears

It can be hard to identify what exactly keeps us afraid. When we wrestle with difficult questions, it is often because of fear. This can include:

  • Fear of rejection. What if you reach out and no is the answer. The thought of summoning courage to get hit with a NO in the face can be overwhelming. Despite many resources, you may convince yourself you cannot do it or don’t want to risk rejection. Do it anyway.
  • Fear of stigma. People may view you however they wish, no matter what you do. If you are labeled as someone with addiction, so what. If you are shunned, so what. The fear of stigma will ruin chances of a good life or job, including good relationships you may have in the future.
  • Fear of imperfection. At some level, deeper still, we may know we are not perfect. Rarely do we want to admit this to other people. Asking for help means admitting we do not have it all together. Admitting we need others is humbling.
  • Fear of failure. Putting yourself out there allows you to come alongside them, do the work, and even fail. When you fear facing yourself, you fear letting others down as well. The problem with thinking this way is that it ignores the fact that lack of success is not the only reason to fail. Failing actually means not reaching out at all, which is the greatest failure of all.
  • Fear of loss. When you are scared of what may happen if people find the truth, it can feel really risky. Maybe you fear putting too much strain on personal relationship by admitting a problem exists or asking a loved one for help. Getting wrapped up in fear of loss means ignoring that we may lose those relationships if we don’t get any help at all.

The biggest roadblock people face leading to recovery is fear itself. Fear leads to so many failures along the way, it actually pushes people further back than deeper in. Once you are able to release fear, there is nothing to be afraid of and help can finally be on the way.
