Know the 5 Signs of an Addictive Personality

The term ‘addictive personality’ can feel overwhelming, in itself, as it is not an official psychiatric diagnosis. Some people may be more prone to addictive behavior than others while many studies are still considering all the causes of addiction. There are five typical signs to watch for in a person with an addictive personality which may be an indicator of issues ahead, but it is only meant as a guide for those who may be wondering how to support a loved one.

Stress

Individuals with addictive personalities tend to experience more stress and anxiety than other individuals. It is thought this may contribute to personal regret or disappointment from others as a result of their substance use.

Impulsivity

People with addictive personalities love excitement and new things. They tend to feel the need to experience great things, one after another, and cannot control themselves. Thrill-seeking behavior can lead to risky behaviors down the road.

Antisocial Behavior

Antisocial behavior is common among this group of people. They tend to feel withdrawn from society. As a result, drugs and alcohol are used to cope.

Lack of Clarity

People with addictive personalities generally struggle to meet expectations, set goals, or achieve the things they say they will do. This is primarily because they are trying to pursue a new passion that is greater than their desire to do what is right and often lack clarity and initiative to get it going, or the wherewithal to see it through to completion.

Negative Self-Image

People with addictive personalities will focus on experiences that bring a rush of excitement. The rush of emotion from trying something new all the time comes from a sense of feeling empty after the activity is done. Feelings of remorse may surface, because the individual is not able to break the cycle.

Addictive behavior can greatly hinder relationships, and other aspects of a person’s life, unless the self-destructive behavior is stopped. Reaching out for help is part of this equation but perhaps a loved one is noticing how destructive life patterns have become and is able or willing to offer help. These five signs are not known causes, per se, of addiction, but they can be a little light from which to shine itself upon a person’s life to illuminate some of the challenges in a new way.
