Empathy is a Little Known Gem That Can Boost Confidence in Recovery

Empathy is the ability to feel how others feel in a situation. Living with compassion and empathy is a key ingredient to healthy recovery from addiction and alcoholism. Learn more about why empathy is so key to boosting confidence in recovery.

Stop the Blame

Watching a loved one go deeper inside painful addiction can bring up feelings of blame, shame, and pointing fingers. There is so much destruction caused as a result of dependency. It can also make the situation worse, causing pushback with increasing hostility and opposition. In order to stop the blame game from continuing, it helps to relate to a loved one and making an effort to identify insecurities. This is the best way to build trust in relationships.

Overcome Shame

Empathy is also an important piece of the puzzle in overcoming shame. Many people with addiction feel guilt or shame over self-destructive behaviors. Responding with criticism or judgment does not help the problem. It can actually leave people feeling disconnected, defensive, or unable to move forward. Reacting in a supportive and caring way can bring different results. When we put ourselves in another’s shoes, we are more able to connect with that person on a deeper level.

Advantages of Empathy

Self-healing is not the only advantage of using empathy as a positive tool. Other benefits include less family conflict, improved communication, increased open-mindedness, and a more positive outlook on life. Utilizing empathy can:

  • Lead to stronger relationships
  • Build a better emotional state
  • Ability to thrive in recovery
  • Build a better road to others in early sobriety

Empathic behavior and thinking has so many benefits, but it personally can create a place where you realize the best way forward in recovery is to feel what others feel. This can help you realize the pain you caused others and then make amends and honestly seek a path forward built on trust.
